Higher Education Opportunities
in China

Daniel Ross, S.J.
Coordinator for Higher Education
Jesuit Chinese Province

The Consul General of China in San Francisco has asked me to introduce men or women from our Jesuit universities and colleges to two Chinese universities. There are many others, but he specifically mentioned two universities where he thinks we could be of more help.
These are South West University in Chongqing and Central China Normal University in Wuhan. You may find these on the web at
http://www.swu.edu.cn and http://www.ccnu.edu.cn/english/

These universities are interested in educators who could teach in many different fields. The medium of instruction would be English.

I sometimes receive individual requests from administrators in Chinese universities for help in finding educators in the the English speaking world who could spend a sabbatical or part of a sabbatical teaching in China. What I do in these cases is ask those who might be interested for their CVs and then send these to the contact at the Chinese schools. If they want to follow up on it I then make the possible introductions and the individual may negotiate with the school in China. Our Chinese Province will help in what way it can to facilitate matters.

For someone who wants to spend some time at a university in China the possibilities are almost limitless. These past few months I have met with quite a few administrators of Chinese universities and their requests are almost always the same. They want to have international contacts. There are some of the top schools, however, where they already have many contacts or are only interested in exchanges with the biggest name schools in the west.
