August 5-25, 2012
Sanata Dharma University Yogyakarta, Indonesia
Service Learning Program (SLP) is one of the many programs of the AJCU-AP which focuses on providing a place for Jesuit university students in their efforts in applying the Ignatian Pedagogy in their everyday life. It is in an approach to teaching in Higher Education that is consistent with the pedagogy of Jesuit education. It attempts to link the academic studies with the practical experience of community service. It is effectively facilitated through relevant partnership between higher educational institutions and various social institutions both in the private and public sectors. In this approach, community experience is purposively integrated in the scholastic formation of the students. It is considered as the center of their learning and serves as an arena to do a share for development. In the end, it will bring about in the students a development that is geared towards a lifelong commitment to service and leadership.

Service Learning Program 2010
Letter from Prof. Ishizawa
8 April 2010
Dear Colleagues,
It is my pleasure, as president of Sophia University, Tokyo, to invite your universities to participate in the Service Learning Program set up this year by Sophia:
PRESERVING CULTURE –
A WAY FOR PRESERVING IDENTITY
Tribal Culture, Family Culture, Historical Culture, Environmental Culture…
The Program will take place in August in Thailand and Cambodia. For the past years our Student Center had set up a small summer program in these countries.
Cambodia is a country with cordial links to our university. In Siem Riep our Sophia Mission has four years been a place not only of archeology but also of monument preservation, a place where young Cambodians can learn how to care for their cultural heritage. The discovery of Buddha statues led to the construction of a museum sponsored by Aeon and handed over to the Cambodian State. It will be my pleasure to welcome your students personally in this beautiful cultural landscape.

SERVICE LEARNING PROGRAM
“Education for Constructive Dialogue”
August 3 – August 23, 2009 |
Unscrupulous exploitation of natural resources and the environment degrade the quality of life; it destroys cultures and sinks the poor in misery. ‘Education for Constructive Dialogue’ is imperative for the youths especially in a rich and multicultural country, like Indonesia yet lack of appreciation of nature and cultures. The richness of both nature and culture within local and national context challenge the community to build a constructive dialogue. The classic understanding of ‘tolerance’ has been proved to be inadequate or was considered minimal in dealing with the growing social problem. Sanata Dharma University, in a mutual effort with the communities offers an opportunity for the students from every discipline to develop their conscience, commitment and compassion with those in need. It takes the participants to communities and institutions partnered by the academic institution in its pursuit to facilitate the student to construct their ability in promoting dialogue through working out a program or internship in specific social circumstances, villages or rural areas around the Campus. The goal of Education of Constructive Dialogue is to draw the student experiencing to be women and men for and with others.
The general framework of the exposure follows the core of the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm including Context, Experience, Reflection, Action, and Evaluation cycle. The student will be first invited to establish proper perspective through a session that provides the context of the entire journey. It proceeds to the integration of actual community experience where conversation is facilitated and relationship is built. This stirs internal movements that will be the groundwork of the reflection where the individual contemplates and make lucid the disturbances that occur from their own experiences and experiences of others. The upshot of the reflection will then be taken as the initial thrust to create concrete action as a response to the gaps observed from the community experience. The action taken will then be reviewed and evaluated.
