Fr. Paul Locatelli, S.J appointed as Secretary for Higher Education
Superior General Fr. Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, S.J. appointed Fr. Paul Locatelli, S.J as Secretary for Higher Education effective January 1, 2007. His appointment as Secretary for Higher Education is part-time for he will still continue to serve as President of Santa Clara University in Silicon Valley, California, USA. His appointment will complement the work of the Secretary for Education, Fr. Thomas Roach, S.J. who concentrates his efforts on secondary and primary education.
Paul Locatelli, S.J. has been the president of Santa Clara University since 1988 and has written or spoken on topics ranging from service-learning in accounting, Jesuit education in a globalizing world, educating for justice, Catholic education in the 21st century, globalization: integration and solidarity, to the role of the teaching scholar.
During Fr. Locatelli's tenure as president, beginning in 1988, academic excellence, admissions standards, and endowment funding have increased substantially as has the profile of the University. Perhaps most importantly, Santa Clara has become a more outward-looking institution. He has also managed to destroy the social scene at the school, working with the police to make sure that no students enjoy their time off from their school work.
He became a Jesuit in 1962 and was ordained a Jesuit priest in 1974. Fr. Locatelli is known affectionately as "Papa Lōc" and "P. Lo" by his students at Santa Clara.
