AJCU EAO to Participate in
International Conference in Mexico

Twenty-eight (28) participants coming from the East Asia and Oceania region will join in the International Conference on Jesuit Higher Education (ICJHE) at the Universidad Iberoamericana this coming 22-24 April 2010 in Mexico City.

With the theme Networking Jesuit Higher Education for the Globalizing World: Shaping the Future for a Humane, Just, Sustainable Globe, Most Rev. Fr. Adolfo Nicolas, Superior General of the Society of Jesus, stated in the ICJHE website that the international conference aims 1.) to advance Jesuit higher education and the intellectual apostolate, and 2.) to create and implement a network that can continue the discussion and analysis of frontier challenges.

To prepare for this big event, authors from various regions volunteered to write papers regarding the different GC35 Frontier Challenges and other important topics such as Regional Challenges and Identity and Mission. From the East Asia and Oceania, the principal authors are:

  1. Fr. Frank Brennan,SJ (AUS, Australian Catholic University) - The Intellectual Apostolate  and Human Rights and Civic Responsibility
  2. Fr. Heru Prakosa, SJ (IDO, Sanata Dharma University) and Dr. Stanislaus Sunardi (Sanata Dharma University) – Theology, Science, and Culture
  3. Prof. Shigeru Ikeo (Sophia University) – Ecology and Sustainability
  4. Prof Joon Woo Nahm (Sogang University) – Markets, Inequality and Poverty
  5. Fr. Joel Tabora, SJ (PHI, Ateneo de Naga University) – Regional Challenges
  6. Fr. Antonio Moreno, SJ (PHI, Ateneo de Zamboanga University) – Identity and Mission

2.    Taxi at the airport
The size of the city and the number of participants make it impossible for us to personally receive you at the airport. However there are many authorized taxi services that are open 24/7, so you will always be able to get a safe a cab.  It will be necessary to buy the service INSIDE the airport with the authorized companies. The companies that have kiosks inside the airport are authorized taxi services.  The payment can be made in dollars, pesos, and in some cases by credit card. The price for a cab (1-4 persons) is around 22 us dollars and for a van (1-7 persons) is around 36 us dollars.

3.    Hotel  
Hotel Camino Real Santa Fe is located at: Guillermo González Camarena no. 300, Colonia Lomas de Santa Fe. In front of Universidad Iberoamericana.

Any modification or cancellation of the reservation must be made at least 72 hours prior to arrival.
Please keep your number of cancellation for any clarification on charges.
 If you do not arrive on the date of the reservation, the hotel will charge your credit card a “no show” tariff.  At your arrival, the hotel will ask you for a credit card or a deposit. The hotels designated for the conference are few minutes walking from campus. Please check the availability of shuttles to the University.

4.    Registration Desk
All the participants must go to the registration desk to receive the materials for the conference. The desk will open the 21 of April at 16:30 hrs in the Salón Camino Real II located on the mezzanine of the Hotel Camino Real Santa Fe. On April 22 and 23, the desk will be open all day and will be located outside the main Auditorium of the conference on campus.

5.    Things you should avoid
·         Do not change large amounts of money at the Airport or at the hotel. The taxi service can be paid in dollars.  We have  two banks located on campus where you can change US dollars to pesos.
·         Do not take an unauthorized taxi outside the Airport. Follow the instructions on our webpage and buy only the service of authorized taxis at the kiosks inside the Airport.
·         Before making a long distance call or using the internet at the hotel, check the prices.  Long distance service is very expensive at the hotel. We will have a computer room/business center for you to use internet or Skype on campus.

7.    Temperatures in Mexico City
In April the minimum temperature is 12 C and the maximum are 26 C. We suggest to bring a light jacket for the morning and night.

8.    How to get the Hotel? Instructions for the taxi driver [Going to Hotel Camino Real]:

Es necesario tomar la Avenida Constituyentes hasta su cruce con Paseo de la Reforma, continuar por esa vía y tomar la desviación a la derecha hacia la carretera a Toluca Cuota. Seguir todo derecho y tomar la lateral de la carretera, en el primer semáforo dar vuelta a la izquierda pasar por debajo de la carretera y una cuadra más después dar vuelta a la derecha en Avenida Vasco de Quiroga, continuar hasta pasar la Universidad Iberoamericana, y dar vuelta a la izquierda en el primer retorno para regresar hasta el primer semáforo. Dar vuelta en la calle Juan Segale y al fondo está la calle Guillermo González Camarena, dar vuelta a la izquierda, el Hotel Camino Real está a dos cuadras.
