2008 Meeting of East Asia Jesuits and Lay Partners in Campus Ministry

Four (4) Jesuit Priests and one (1) Scholastic from East Asia and Oceania (EAO) together with Lay Campus Ministers from the Five Ateneo Schools in the Philippines met last June 4-6, 2008 at the Ateneo de Manila University Campus, East Asian Pastoral Institute (EAPI).  The meeting was organized by the Loyola Schools Campus Ministry Office and the Jesuit Conference of East Asia and Oceania (JCEAO) headed by its Coordinator for Jesuits and Lay Collaborators in Campus Ministry, Fr. Roberto Buenconsejo, S.J.

With the theme “Becoming missionaries in the university in an increasingly secular society”, the meeting aimed to better organize the campus ministry apostolate in the EAO region as well as to propose to the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities in East Asia and Oceania (AJCU EAO) some form of representation of campus ministry in the association.  The meeting also hoped to explore ways of greater cooperation between campus ministers serving in both Catholic and non-Catholic Higher Educational Institutions of the JCEAO.

Objectives of the meeting were:

  1. To enrich one’s own understanding of campus ministry through the sharing of experiences in evangelizing the youth in an increasingly secular, pluralistic world.
  2. To appreciate the different approaches employed by campus ministry in ministering to the youth of today.
  3. To share one’s dreams and vision as a campus minister in one’s respective university.
  4. To deepen ones’ commitment and sense of mission through a deeper understanding of missiology.

The five (5) Jesuit priests/scholastic from the EAO who came were:  Fr. Jojo Fung, S.J. from Malaysia/Singapore, Scholastic Alvin Ng from Malaysia/Singapore, Fr. Robert In Nugroho, S.J. from Indonesia, Fr. Hideyuki Koyana and Fr. Markus Chong from Japan.  The Lay Campus Ministers who were present were: Mr. Ryan Rolf Fuentes and Ms. Leah Vidal from ADDU, Ms. Eda Castillo and Mr. Jek Pesigan from ADMU, Mr. Richard Bautista and Mr. Wilbur Almoneda from ADNU, Mr. John Dwight Pimentel and Ms. Ingrid Daba from Xavier University, Ms. Josephine Tarroza and Miss Judith Joy Tugade  from ADZU.

AJCU-EAO Chair and Ateneo de Naga University President, Fr. Joel E. Tabora, S.J., was also present in the meeting to welcome the participants as well as to facilitate in the discussions.  Also in attendance were, Bishop Soc Villegas who shared his experiences and challenges in evangelizing the Youth and Fr. Danny Huang, S.J., the former Jesuit Provincial, who made a presentation and shared his experiences on the GC35.

Fr. Bienvenido Nebres, S.J., Ateneo de Manila President and Fr. Mark Raper, S.J., the new JCEAO President both shared their experiences on GC35 through video-taped interviews.

The outcome of the meeting will be presented by Fr. Buenconsejo, S.J. in the next AJCU-EAO meeting on August 26-28, 2008.
