Service Learning Program 2009
20 Days of Service, 20 Days of Learning, 20 Days of Fun -- The 2009 Service Learning Program have concluded last 23 August 2009 but memories of the grand occasion still linger among the participants.
Under the theme Education for Constructive Dialogue, this year's Service Learning Program was hosted by Sanata Dharma University last 3-23 August 2009. With 36 students and 15 faculty members from the various Jesuit Institutions in East Asia and Oceania, the program provided a dynamic synergy of learning, reflection and fun among SLP participants.
The first four days were alloted for orientation activities with the introduction of the nature of the SLP and the social context of Indonesia, particularly Yogyakarta and the focus island of Sumba. Lectures and discussions on Education for Constructive Dialogue in the perspective of Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm were also also given. After the orientation, the students were then exposed to the local culture through various immersive activies: from building a bridge, working with the locals at an agriculture area, absorbing the cultural sights and sounds, learning and producing art performances, to producing educational pieces. The last three days were alloted for reflection and dialogue among participants.
Of course, it wasn't all just pure learning and immersion, the students also produced a special Cultural Night were they presented traditional and modern dances, showcased cultural fashion, and even played local games.
It was an emotional departure for everyone as the SLP participants bid their hosts and newfound friends tearful farewells. With the intensely positive feedback from the participants, the Service Learning Program continues to grow further, creating a deep bond not only among the students, but also among the Jesuit Institutions. In the recently concluded AJCU EAO Meeting last August, due to the popular demand from the SLP Participants, Sophia University has graciously volunteered to be the host of the Service Learning Program in 2010!
