AJCU-EAO Convenes Annual Meeting

The Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities in the East Asia and Oceania (AJCU-EAO) gathered last August 21-22, 2007 for its Annual Meeting. The Ateneo de Manila University graciously hosted the two-day meeting at the PLDT- Convergent Technologies Center (CTC) Room 201. Delegates were also housed at the ADMU Jesuit Residence, Pollock Center, Arrupe International Guest House, and Alingal Hall. A total of twenty-four (24) delegates from member schools in Korea (Sogang University), Indonesia (Sanata Dharma University and ATMI), Japan (Sophia University and Elisabeth University of Music), Taiwan (Fu Jen University), China (The Beijing Center) as well as member schools from the Philippines (Ateneo de Manila, Ateneo de Naga, Ateneo de Davao, Ateneo de Zamboanga, Xavier School and the Loyola School of Theology) came to attend the said meeting. Fr. Adolfo Nicolas, S.J., President of the Jesuit Colleges in East Asia & Oceania (JCEAO) was also there to grace the event.

The Guest Speaker for the meeting was Fr. Paul Locatelli, S.J., President of the University of Sta. Clara in California, USA, and newly appointed Secretary for Higher Education for the Society of Jesus. His talk centered around the Meeting’s Theme which was Jesuit Universities and The Pursuit of Social Justice in a Global World: Preparing for the Meeting of Jesuit University Presidents. Fr. Joel Tabora, S.J., President of the Ateneo de Naga University and Chair of the AJCU-EAO presided over the whole meeting. He led the group through the sharing of the CEOs and the conversations after Fr. Locatelli’s Talk. He also facilitated the business meeting which included the new membership of Loyola School of Theology, the AJCU-EAO Financial Report and the approval of next year’s Meeting. It was then agreed upon that next year’s AJCU-EAO meeting will be in Indonesia where the ASEACCU meeting will be held. Meeting details such as dates, venue, theme and speaker will be posted once finalized.
